The Mystic Lake Casino Hotel

Visitors will find the Mystic Lake casino hotel southwest of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, in Prior Lake, Minnesota. The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community is the owner and operator for it, and, with 4 200 employees, it is the biggest employer in all of Scott County.

The History of Mystic Lake Casino Hotel

The owner operator of Mystic Lake casino hotel, the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community or SMSC, is a sovereign Indian tribe that has been federally recognised. The SMSC and other tribes from the Minnesota area were the first in all of the United States of America to discuss, define and sign contracts between tribes and the state in terms of state government and gaming, and the Mystic Lake casino hotel opened its doors in 1992. The success of this venture has allowed the SMSC to fund various goals, including meeting many economic diversification targets and improving tribal services and infrastructure overall in the intervening years.

The SMSC kicked off a ten-year cooperative agreement with its Shakopee, Minnesota neighbours Canterbury Park in 2012, and this deal supports enlarged purses for live horse racing events and enables other joint marketing prospects between the two areas. The first complete racing season under this agreement took place in 2013, and saw Canterbury Park conclude its best season since 2006, with a purse distribution that doubled the amount of money paid out to racehorse owners in 2011.
