How Palace Station Came to Be
As mentioned, Palace Station has been around for decades, although it had a different name back in 1976 – The Casino. Today, Palace Station occupies 84 000 square feet at 2411 West Sahara Avenue but The Casino gambling hall was much smaller, only taking up 5000 square feet and was attached to a small motel.
The venue’s name was changed to Bingo Palace in 1977 and began to experience considerable success as the first of its kind to focus on local residents instead of tourists, with draw cards including affordable buffets, regular giveaways, and bingo.
Palace Station, as we know it today, really began to take shape in 1984, when it was expanded and remodelled according to a railway theme. It was also at this time that it was given the name that it has kept to this day – Palace Station Hotel and Casino.
Over the next couple of years, the owners of Palace Station purchased the motel next door and converted it into a 21-storey hotel tower with high-rise parking garage.
In 1993, Palace Station’s owners began to buy up the other properties that would eventually come to comprise the Station Casinos franchise.
Its Unusual Off-Strip Location
Many observers in the Las Vegas casino industry were sceptical of Palace Station Hotel and Casino’s chances of success. This scepticism was primarily due to its location away from the famous Las Vegas strip – in other words, away from the bulk of tourist traffic.
Its success despite this obstacle was largely the result of its focus on permanent Las Vegas residents and opened the flood gates for other similar establishments, such as Sam’s Town and Gold Coast, to emerge.
